Marc Shale

Water-skiing instructor

In the early years, up to 1966, there wasn't any water-skiing at Tyler Hill Camp. There was once an active camp across Laurel Lake, so it was off limits to Tyler Hill Camp; while Silver Lake was too small for water-skiing, because the docks were extending into the lake for swimming. Campers who wanted to go water-skiing were driven in small groups to Lake Huntington, in Cochecton, where there was plenty of room. When Camp Harlee Mitchell closed, Laurel Lake became available for water-skiing in 1967.

Marc came to Tyler Hill Camp in 1971, and has held the same position of Water-skiing Instructor ever since. For around 25 years, he was a familiar sight down by Laurel Lake, until the the mid-nineties. But the addition of a large swimming pool facility prompted the removal of the "girls" crib dock from Silver Lake, making it larger for boating activities. So now the water-skiing takes place on Silver Lake, which means that Marc no longer has to go up and down that hill anymore. Marc is the longest running active member of the Tyler Hill Camp staff.
